FINAL EPISODE RECAP Sang-taeâs mom, aka Team Princessâs smoking gun, arrives in country and apologizes to Sang-tae for being so late to come back for him. He cries on her shoulder and then counters with an apology of his own for not being able to protect her back then, which just breaks my heart even more. But he assures her, âIâll protect you now. Iâm all grown up.â Aw. Gong-joo is waiting to pick them up I love that she still defaults to introducing herself as Bang-woolâs mom, but so are Chairman Hongâs goons, who have spotted Momâs arrival. Thankfully Sang-tae sees them first, and he sends everyone ahead while he throws himself on the hood of the baddiesâ car to play interference. Noah assures Mom that Sang-tae will be okay because Chairman Hong wouldnât do anything to his son. Sang-tae is indeed brought back to his room safely, where Chairman Hong lays into him for disobeying and plotting to take down his own father. He uses the age-old excuse that this is all for Sang-taeâs benefit, but that just makes Sang-tae snap âFor me? Donât say that itâs for me! Then I feel like I have to go and die, because thatâs the only way youâll stop!â Chairman Hong is done trying to negotiate with him and steals Sang-taeâs phone before locking him up in his room. He then calls his ex-wife to threaten her with the only thing that might keep her from spilling their family secrets her son. Of course it works like a charm, and immediately Mom retracts her testimony with apologiesâshe canât risk Sang-tae for this. Minister Kang gives the contrite father speech at a press conference, even asking that the justice system be harsh towards his son no matter who his father is. Wow, only you would turn your sonâs criminal indictment into a publicity opportunity. The prosecutor makes Jung-woo watch the press conference, perhaps in a last-ditch effort to get him to turn on his father since his hands have been tied in the slush fund investigation. It seems to work, because Jung-woo asks to make a phone call. He calls Ae-yeon and asks if sheâll pay him one last visit in prison, which she refuses. Sheâs about to hang up when he tells her that there was something he wanted to give her on their last date, and asks her to go back there at times and drink on his tab. He adds sincerely that he hopes sheâll meet a better man someday, and sheâs brought to tears as she hangs up. Chairman Hong brings Minister Kang a tape recorder from the vault, which puts him at ease. But news of Sang-taeâs mother being in town doesnât, and he warns that she could very well put both of them in jeopardy. Yi-kyungâs mom shares her story with Sang-taeâs mom, and admits to turning her back on Kang-ja at first, thinking she was protecting her child, only to realize that the only true way to protect their children was to fight back. Then Kang-ja and Noah return with police officers in tow and encourage Sang-taeâs mother to fight for himâsheâs his mother after all, and if heâs being held against his will she has a right to rescue him. Oh right. And here I was thinking up wild Mission Impossible rescue schemes involving ski masks. So the whole gang walks right through the front door with the cops behind them, and Chairman Hong sputters that they canât do this. Minister Kang quickly sees that the situation has gotten out of control, and gets everyone to try and talk this out. Noah goes straight for Sang-taeâs room, and when he sees the padlock on the outside, he yells at Sang-tae to stand back and then proceeds to break the door down. But! Youâre a nerdy teacher! It takes a while but the door busts open with great force, and Sang-tae watches agape as Noah strides in like a big olâ hero. I love this moment. Itâs like Sang-tae has stars in his eyes, and when Noah looks him over in worry to make sure he isnât hurt, Sang-tae smiles âI have never in all my years seen anyone like you.â Noah quips back that he hasnât lived all that long. Minister Kang sits the three mothers down and tries to smooth-talk them, but Kang-ja cuts him off to say that she knows his two faces all too well, so he can skip to the point. So he opens up a briefcase full of money, which is met with a resounding scoff. Kang-ja yells that he turned his son into a monster who killed their children, but he doesnât seem to have an ounce of contrition in him about it. That comment just rolls right off his back and Minister Kang changes his tack, offering to pave the way for Ah-ranâs future and Sang-taeâs as well. He tells them to keep their mouths shut and keep living the way they have, because thatâs whatâs best for their children. Right on cue, Sang-tae storms into the room to announce that heâll decide that for himself, thank you very much. Woot! Chairman Hong blusters that they canât leave, but Noah informs him that his lawn is filled with reporters who canât be paid off, so he can go ahead and try to stop them. In one last ditch effort, Chairman Hong cries that thereâs no such thing as a son who abandons his father, and despite the hypocrisy dripping in his statement, it gets to Sang-tae. He turns to Mom and asks her to go and do what needs to be done, and heâll stay here. Sang-tae actually says he feels sorry for his father and doesnât want to abandon him. He reassures Mom again and again that Dad never hits him and the worst thing he does is lock him in his room, and asks her to stay the course. It works, and Mom gets to walk out with assurances from Sang-tae that he wants her to testify. Minister Kang immediately gets on the phone with the prosecutorâs office and demands to be given a week before interrogation, and orders Chairman Hong to bring him the real slush fund accounting book first thing in the morning. Chairman Hong lies that he had it moved to a bank for safe keeping, but then later that night he takes it out at home and smiles as he talks to someone on the phone, whom he refers to as a presidential candidate. Itâs what he calls Minister Kang, but somehow I donât think heâs the one calling. Ah, and from the hallway, Sang-tae eavesdropsâmaybe this is part of the reason he braved his father, to get his hands on that book. The prosecutor is surprised at how readily his boss signs off on Minister Kangâs arraignment, but is met with opposition when it comes to the search warrant for Chairman Hongâs vault. Hm, it looks like the power has shifted, and it must have to do with that phone call. Meanwhile Ae-yeon mulls over Jung-wooâs words to her and decides to go to the restaurant to pick up the gift he left for her. Iâm surprised that it isnât the tape recorderâitâs a necklace, and a letter about how much he regrets not giving this to her right away. He hopes to see her wearing it in court, and says itâll be the greatest gift she can give to him, and the greatest revenge. Itâs court day, and Minister Kang sees for himself on television that all of his colleagues are distancing themselves from him as fast as they possibly can. Sang-taeâs mom testifies about the slush fund and Chairman Hongâs lifetime of threats to keep her from talking, and when the prosecutor asks what made her change her mind, she says, âBecause Iâm a mother too.â She says that she had to step in before he turned their son into a monster too, and we see Sang-tae watching from a viewing room with Ah-ran and Bok-dong by his side. Ah-ran silently takes his hand, and Bok-dong mutters that there are bad sides to having a rich dad after all. Yeah you forgot psycho. Psycho rich dad. A few rows behind them, Yi-kyungâs mom gets a call and tells the other person to hurry. In the courtroom, Minister Kang and Chairman Hong take turns telling clashing sob stories on the witness stand, each claiming that the other was responsible for the slush fund. The prosecution says that they have a last-minute witness and asks for some time, and we see Ae-yeon arrive at the courthouse and hand over a recorder to be admitted as evidence. Jung-woo is there in handcuffs and sees her wearing the necklace, and we flash back to the moment when she opened the box to find the recorder tucked inside. She tells him that this isnât for him, but he smiles sincerely and tells her that she looks pretty today. Jung-woo takes the stand and testifies to the true inner workings of the foundation and how it funded his fatherâs campaign. When the lawyers attack his credibility, the prosecutor plays the recording that damns Minister Kang so completely as a cold-hearted father who called his son a stain on his perfect record. The lawyers try to object, but the judge notably looks to Chairman Hong for approval before allowing it to be played. Iâm guessing that someone else is going to become the new president because of that little nod right there. Jung-woo turns to his father in court and says that heâs the one who turned him into a monster, and that if he had just once accepted his son or his wife and loved them, it wouldnât have gone this far. Minister Kang screams that Jung-woo ruined his life, and snaps âI shouldâve killed you long ago!â By the time he remembers that heâs in court, itâs too late. As they walk out, Jung-woo tells his father that heâll be waiting for him in prison. Chairman Hong yells at Sang-tae for showing up at the courthouse, but Sang-tae is fixated on what happened inside the courtroom today. He asks shakily, âWhen I grow up, do I become Do Jung-woo?â Agh. He continues, âWhy didnât you live better, Father? When I see the two of them, I feel like thatâs our future, and it scares me.â The horrifying fear falls on deaf ears, naturally, but Ah-ran is there to stand by Sang-taeâs side as he cries. The prosecutorâs office gets permission to raid every office and vault for evidence, but they still come up empty on the one thing they really need that damned log book that Chairman Hong has moved someplace. At last, we get to see all our baddies sitting in a row in prison jumpsuits as their trial begins, and itâs a satisfying sight. The prosecutor delivers an impassioned set of charges against each of them, calling them collectively an example of the worst kind of corruption in this nation down to its roots, and the very destruction of hope and trust in this country. He moves for the highest prison sentence that each of their charged crimes allows seven years for Minister Kang, six for Chairman Hong too few if you ask me, a lifetime sentence for Jung-woo, two years for Dong-chil, and one for Ae-yeon. Yi-kyungâs mother bursts into tears at Jung-wooâs announcement, and Kang-ja notices Ah-ranâs worried reaction to Dong-chilâs sentence. The prisoners are led out after the trial, theyâre met by an angry mob of mothers screaming that their sentences werenât enough for the deaths of their children. Chairman Hong in particular managed to squirm away with only TWO measly years in jail, and of course heâs the one shouting that he doesnât deserve to be punished. Heâs pelted with eggs by angry mothers, and Kang-ja and the gang look on with steely gazes, knowing that he deserves far worse. But heâs obviously in someone elseâs pocket now. A man is there watching, but all we see is a pair of shoes. Three months later. Kang-ja and the girls drag Mom-in-law out for some fresh air to keep her from wallowing in depression, and shopping puts a small smile back on her face. She ignores their choices for matronly outfits and points over to a very brightly colored shirtdress, and Kang-ja gently points out that itâs for younger people to wear. But Mom-in-law means for Kang-ja to try it on, and sighs that she looks so pretty that Jin-sang would fall in love with her all over again if he were here. Aw. She caresses Kang-jaâs face sweetly through her tears. The mystery man is watching the girls from afar, and then heâs there again in the crowd when Chairman Hong gets out of prison. Wait, itâs only been three months! Bok-dong and Noah see his release on TVâapparently the new president gave him a special pardon. URG. That mustâve been the deal all this time. Chairman Hong goes to see the presidentâs aide to make sure that theyâve kept the notebook safe, and reminds them that heâs put his life in their hands by giving it to them. The book ominously joins a pile of many other books that look just like it. The skeezy vice principal tells Chairman Hong that heâs got a man watching âthem,â and Chairman Hong says thereâs no need to go after them all. He just needs one to make his point. Itâs not hard to guess where his revenge will be directed. Dong-chil is being moved to a new prison facility when he hears the radio report about Chairman Hongâs release, and panic sets in instantly. He knows what Chairman Hong is after without having to guess, and uses a bathroom break at a rest stop to make his escape. Jung-hee and her friend ask Ah-ran to join their threesome to make it a threesome again, but Ah-ran is stunned when she gets a call⊠Noah calls Kang-ja over for dinner tonight, and she tells him cheerily that sheâs already bought ingredients to cook for them. But he says soberly that itâs a strategy meeting, because Chairman Hong has been released. Kang-ja doesnât even have a chance to recover from the shock of that news before the hitman on her tail yanks her into the shadows. Eep. Ah-ran runs to meet Dong-chil. That mustâve been the call she got, and she pleads with him to hurry up and go turn himself in. She asks why heâs always doing the wrong thing, and he doesnât seem to disagree with her on that. She asks if he escaped because he wanted to see her, and he chokes back tears and calls her crazy. She believes more than ever that heâs her biological father, and finally, FINALLY, he gives her a straight answer âYouâre not my daughter. Youâre my niece. Youâre the daughter of the brother I accidentally killed.â THANK YOU. Was that so hard? Ah-ranâs eyes fill with tears as he hands over a picture of him and Bum. Heâs a blubbering mess as he describes how Bum was so smart and good and different from him. For all of Dong-chilâs many faults, you could never say he didnât love his brother more than life itself. Bok-dong runs up, confused to see them both in tears, and Dong-chil tells Ah-ran to study hard and listen to her mother. He gives her a pat on the head, then collects himself and tells Bok-dong to make sure she gets home safely. Why does it feel like such a final goodbye? Dong-chil goes straight for the vice principal and threatens him until he spills Chairman Hongâs location. Heâs at a construction site goodness I hope itâs not one of his own, with Kang-ja held captive. She asks if Sang-tae shouldnât be the first person he visits, relaying how hard itâs been on him the last few months. He argues that thatâs the very reason heâs coming after her, because she drove a wedge in between him and his son. Oh, Kang-ja did, and not your sociopathic greed? He grabs a pipe to show her just exactly how unforgiving he is about people who cross him, when Dong-chil arrives and shouts his name. I could hug you right now! Okay, maybe not hug so much as cheer on from a safe distance, but whatever. He makes short work of the minions, until itâs him and Chairman Hong with just Kang-ja between them. Chairman Hong grabs her to use as a hostage, and thereâs this hilarious beat where Kang-ja just rolls her eyes before kicking the crap out of Chairman Hong herself. Yes please, Iâll watch that again! Dong-chil soon takes over and starts beating the living daylights out of Chairman Hong, screaming, âDie! Die! Die!â until Kang-ja pries him off. She tells him to stop, but Dong-chil argues that she saw it for herselfâthe law doesnât work for cockroaches like Hong, and heâll always find a way back. He has to be killed. Kang-ja argues that heâll have to rot in prison for the rest of his life, and he asks why she isnât repulsed by him. She in turn says that she knows he secretly helped Ah-ran âWas it because sheâs your brotherâs daughter?â He hangs his head âBecause sheâs your daughter. I was wrong, Jo Kang-ja, for pushing what was mine onto you. Iâm sorry, Jo Kang-ja.â Wow, is he finally admitting to her that he killed Bum? And then, like the cockroach that he is, Chairman Hong rises to his feet with a pipe in the air, ready to swing down on Kang-jaâs head. Dong-chil sees him first and shoves her out of the way, and rushes Chairman Hong until they both go flying into a wall of loose bricks. The whole thing comes crashing down on them, and Kang-ja runs over to the rubble to lift Dong-chil up. Chairman Hong is bleeding but conscious and asks for their help, but Dong-chil tells him that this is exactly how those children felt âYou should feel it too.â They walk away and leave him there, and even his minions desert him. Then a familiar pair of shoes belonging to the presidentâs aide approach menacingly, and Chairman Hong actually looks frightened⊠The news reports Chairman Hongâs death, trapped under rubble at Myeongseongâs new construction site. A little on the nose, but damn satisfying all the same. Six months later. Itâs spring again, and Kang-ja is back to working in the kitchen of her restaurant. She narrates just like she did in the opening, that there are strong and weak people in the world. Most people speak of strength as money or power, but she has people in her life who are strong without those things. She tells us that Gong-jooâs nightclub went bankrupt, but she still talks to her princess minions like a boss. Kang-ja âThey called that loyalty.â We watch them hang up a new sign that reads âGong-joo and Bang-woolâs Lunchbox House.â Bok-dong meets his brother outside of prison with tofu at the ready, and they hug each other happily. Hyung jokes about what a pain Dong-chil was on the inside, and Bok-dong says he wants to stop and bring Dong-chil some food, inciting a little hyung-to-hyungnim jealousy. Kang-ja narrates that her young friend who used to use his fists became an innocent lamb from that day forward. âHe called that love.â Noah greets his students as they arrive at school, and now heâs the schoolâs most popular and beloved teacher. Kang-ja âThey called that respect.â Ah-ran does become part of Jung-heeâs trio, and they pass by the vice principal how does he still have a job in education? and stick a mocking note on his back. Kang-ja narrates that when teachers donât act like teachers and adults donât act like adults, children see it right away. Kang-ja wants to stop to buy Ah-ran a new pair of sneakers, and asks why Gong-joo is looking at boysâ shoes. Gong-joo chides her for not thinking of Bok-dongie enough, when the kid is practically shouting her name from the rooftops. Kang-ja chuckles and calls it a lack of motherly affection in his life, and that gives Gong-joo pause, wondering if she should become a mother for real. Yes! Duh! Kang-ja nags her not to mess with the kids like that, and they go. But youâll keep thinking about adopting Bok-dongie, right? Noah takes the class on a trip into the mountains, where he asks them to take a picture of something that inspires them and write an original poem. Kang-ja and Gong-joo join them with lunchboxes for everyone, and the class greets them with cheers. Kang-ja hands her box over to Noah and jumps up to throw her arm around Bok-dong, and he shinks back, acting like she has cooties. Crush still going strong, I see. Oh, puppy. Both Noah and Kang-ja notice the way Sang-tae sticks to Ah-ranâs side and stoops down to offer her a piggyback ride cute, and Ah-ran hurries him up before other people see. Kang-ja narrates, âStill, there are the kinds of relationships in this world where people donât have money or power, but they still treat each other with loyalty, love, and respect. And the one who loves more is the weaker one. But Iâm sure that a world in which the one who loves more is the stronger one exists, somewhere out there.â Gong-joo and her princess minions fight good-naturedly over kimbap, and Ah-ran makes an effort to befriend the girls who were mean to her all year long. Sang-tae and Bok-dong sit together and moon over Kang-ja and Ah-ran, which is hilarious given that theyâre mother and daughter. Sang-tae says that Ah-ran is becoming more like her mother every day, and sheâs becoming really strong. Bok-dong assures Sang-tae that heâs plenty strong, perhaps even stronger than he is, and Sang-taeâs like, Yeah no duh. Sang-taeâs always got his nose in a book these days, and says offhandedly that they say a person needs love and dreams in order to succeed. He asks Bok-dong if he has that. When the question gets thrown back at him, Sang-tae says that heâs going to become a prosecutor because his father left some homework for him that slush fund notebook, which likely got passed up the chain to the highest command. Youâd be right about that. Sang-tae plans to bring that corruption to light someday. Bok-dong gazes up at Kang-ja and says, âI donât know about love, but I have a dream too.â He just smiles a big boyish grin. Noah joins Kang-ja at the top of the bluff overlooking the city, and she notes that it really is spring again, making them forget already when it was so cold and painful. She asks if spring will come to their school again, and Noah says that if thereâs spring, there will be winter too âIn every spring they say thereâs a winter.â Kang-ja replies, âThat also means that in every winter, thereâs a spring.â Noah smiles and says that sheâs right, and she tells him that it was because of him that she was able to withstand the fight. He counters that it was because of the mothers that it was even possible. Kang-ja adds with a note of sadness, âAnd the fathersâŠâ Noah narrates, âIt was truly a long and harsh winter. In the world where spring has come, I often think of the seeds that are asleep within the ice, unable to sprout. Iâd like it if warm spring showers would fall and melt the ice away, so that the seeds could sprout and stand, and the world could be covered in spring flowers.â Everyone gathers for a class picture, as Kang-ja ends the narration âIâd like it if there were many more strong ones [kang-jas], and Iâd like if it would hurry up and come soonerâthe world where the ones who love more win.â COMMENTS If I had to sum up this finale in two words, itâd be poetic justice, for sure. I wasnât expecting to get this much plot in the finale, though Iâll never regret a thorough showdown with solid payoffs. It was important to see how Minister Kang and Chairman Hong had driven their sons to the point of betrayal, and it was particularly satisfying to watch them get burned by their own children, since this war essentially boiled down to bad parents vs. good parents. I wouldâve preferred a little more time spent on happy sendoffs and more adorable moments for our makeshift family with real adoption papers wouldâve been nice, just sayinâ, but I did love the tone of the ending. Itâs the kind of open-ended that I love, with just enough closure to show us what path everyone is on, but enough openness to make us wonder what their futures could hold. The ending leaves me feeling bittersweet in that great way where I donât want the story to end, because Iâve come to love these characters so much. Kim Hee-sun has never been better, and Iâm pretty sure Iâve seen every character sheâs ever played, cute, terrible, or otherwise. But this was her most honest performanceâsimple, down-to-earth, believably vulnerable and strong at the same time. This was an ensemble drama, but she really carried it on her shoulders and made me care from start to finish. The supporting cast was lovely as well, from Kim Yoo-jung to Ji Hyun-woo, and even evil Kim Tae-hoon Do Jung-woo and Kim Hee-won Ahn Dong-chil. I had a special fondness for Gong-joo Go Soo-hee, who was one of the best moms in the entire show, and of course the showâs breakout star Ji-soo, who took Bok-dongie and turned him into a teenage rebel heartthrob. His epic puppy love will warm my heart for nothing short of a century. It was really nice to get lost in the characters and trust that the story had been planned out from the start, and though the music choices were jarring at times, I found the directing to be consistently engaging. The suspense, the humor, the horror, the emotional pain, the poignant moments of reflectionâeach was given its own measured space to play out, and no matter how disparate the emotions from scene to scene, I never felt like it wasnât a natural part of the Angry Mom world. A very dark world where Iâd be scared to go to high school, but honestly not so different from the real one. The fact that I was so moved by Dong-chilâs turnaround is the thing that surprised me the most. I found him to be a complex and interesting character, sure, but I had always thought of him as a lost cause who could come around enough to regret his actions, but never really redeem himself. But his pain was so raw when it counted, and when he broke down in front of Ah-ran and finally told her the truthânot only about her parentage but about his part in killing his own brother by accidentâI felt such unabated sympathy for him when I thought I never would. Heâs such a tragic figure in this story who doesnât necessarily deserve a second chance or a happily ever after, but I feel like he earned it anyway, despite the odds. Maybe not happiness, but acceptance and peace, and people to be connected to. It counts for a great deal when you risk everything to save our heroine in the final hour, and like most things in this drama, it brought their story full circle to have him protect the girl who took the fall for his biggest regret in life. I loved that Angry Mom could be a story about such fierce love without romance. There was romantic love within the story mostly one-sided and completely adorable, gah, but this was a show about family and the universal love of a parent for a child, and most importantly, that this love extends beyond biological connection or familial obligation. We ran the gamut from terrible parents who were responsible for creating monsters, to average parents who struggled to do what was best for their children, to those who stepped up to become surrogate parents, to the most heroic kind who would continue to fight no matter what it cost. And the message was loud and clear You reap what you sow. I especially appreciated what Noah contributed as a teacher, because he showed that there is such a thing as course-correcting when you intervene at the right time. He loved his students as much as or sometimes more than any parent, and changed Sang-tae and Bok-dongâs lives completely. I like the balance we got between realism powerful men like Chairman Hong get away with murder, quite literally and dramaland satisfaction Fate says you get squished by a ton of bricks in the very spot where you let children die on your watch, asshole. His trajectory reminds us that most of the time, corruption like his goes unchecked and the powerful stay in power because there is no loyalty among thieves. Itâs why Kang-jaâs speech at the end about strength coming from loyalty, love, or respect is such a satisfying way to tie up the difference between the strong and the weak in our story. Because the strong had everything at their disposal except those things, and our underdogs had nothing but each other. And in the end the so-called strong ones just tore each other part because they had no loyalty to speak of. I always prefer the kind of ending that rings true to life, where the fight simply continues and corruption goes on, but so does the hope of people who believe in justice and righting wrongs. Maybe this one battle is just a blip in a long war between the little guys and the people who abuse their power, but the fact that heroes continue to hope is what makes them strong, and inspires a new generation of kids to dream in their footsteps. Maybe protecting her child is a motherâs greatest mission in life, but I think the most impressive thing she could ever do is to make the world a slightly better place, and to inspire a child to become a fighter just like her. And it turns out that you donât even need to be strong to do itâjust full of love. But just as he arrives at his door, Noah comes charging up, shoving papers at Jung-woo as his excuse for being here, though we know heâs trying to check on Kang-ja. Noah fakes an excuse about needing the restroom and is literally wrestling with Jung-woo at the doorway when Kang-ja steps out. Noah follows her to scold her for going to a teacherâs home late at nightâand Kang-ja, stunned at her revelation, just agrees with him. She cuts off Noahâs lecture to say that you canât blame the student when the teacher is a thousand times more in the wrong. Noah demands to know if Jung-woo did anything to her and is ready to confront him about it. But Kang-ja huffs that he doesnât know anything, leaving Noah very confused. Ah-ran is surprised to hear that her mother has put together the truth. Kang-ja insists that the girls should have told their mothers rather than trying to deal with something so huge on their own, to which Ah-ran retorts, âThen Do Jung-woo would probably have killed Yi-kyung sooner.â Kang-ja asks how it all started, and Ah-ran explains that Yi-kyung was an outcast at school. When Ah-ran met her, Yi-kyung dove into the friendship wholeheartedly because sheâd been so lonely before. It was after they became close that Ah-ran came to know of Yi-kyungâs relationship with the teacher, which had ended when he tired of her. And like the mean bastard he is, Jung-wooâs method of ending it was to order Yi-kyung to transfer to a new school. Sheâd agreed but needed time to convince her mother to allow it, and the longer she remained at school, the more he sent Bok-dong after her to scare her into leaving. Ah-ran had stood up to Bok-dong, which got her harassed as well. Now Kang-ja knows the full story, although Ah-ran pleads with her to let it go, worried that Jung-woo will hurt her if she persists. Kang-ja retorts defiantly, âNo, Mom will handle it. Iâll get Do Jung-woo.â Yeah you will! Jung-woo opens the mailed envelope that Kang-ja had gotten to first, and only now sees Yi-kyungâs note and pregnancy test. He bolts up in shock and anger. Kang-ja seeks out Yi-kyungâs mother and tells her what she knows, all fired up to go after the teacher. But Yi-kyungâs mother says that her daughter is already dead, and has been scorned enoughâshe wonât have Yi-kyung trampled yet again. Kang-ja is shocked that a mother could be willing to cover this up, but Yi-kyungâs mother says she has her younger child to think of. She keeps a stiff upper lip until she leaves the cafe and breaks down in tears. Kang-ja shares what sheâs learned with Gong-joo, who points out that continuing her path is dangerous for Ah-ran. Kang-ja replies that Ah-ranâs already in dangerâshe has to stop Jung-woo before he does anything to her. And now that sheâs seen the pregnancy test, thereâs evidence against him⊠if only she can get it. In the morning, mother and daughter head into school together, and Ah-ran warns Mom not to do anything dangerous to trigger Jung-wooâs suspicions. Thatâs when Jung-woo appears to ask to see Ah-ran alone, to Kang-jaâs consternation, and once again pokes around to see how much she remembers. Jung-woo comments that itâd be nice if people would be transparent with their thoughts, so as to avoid misunderstandings. Ah-ran replies that heâs describing a dead fishâyou canât see through the living ones. Jung-woo says meaningfully that sheâs quite smart, and heâs curious to know just how much How is her memory? Her ability to judge when and when not to interfere? He adds that Yi-kyung sent him a âgiftââdid Ah-ran help pick it out? Ah-ran doesnât know what heâs talking about, and he figures thatâs for the best. âRemember that Iâm always watching over you,â he says. Kang-ja tries her best to eavesdrop at the door, and Jung-wo catches her lurking. Itâs a good thing she has her fake crush to serve as excuse, since he assumes thatâs the reason for her attention and finds it amusing. It also makes it less suspicious when Kang-ja asks if heâs busy tonight and whether heâll be late coming home. His reply heâll be very late gives Kang-ja the info to start planning her way in. But Noah catches the exchange and scolds her for dangling after Jung-woo. Ha, I love that this misunderstanding is dragging on, because Kang-jaâs certainly not about to tell him the truth, but heâs just going to keep assuming wrongly without a better explanation. And when she grumbles about his old-fashioned earnestness, he exclaims, âYou can like him in your heart, but not like this!â The ridiculous Vice Principal Oh assembles the faculty to greet Chairman Hong to the school, hovering obsequiously as he points out Kang-ja as the student who beat up Sang-tae. Chairman Hong looks at her blankly âBut sheâs a girl. This doesnât make sense!â The chairman gives a mind-numbingly dull speech about school violence that stretches on so long that students squirm and fidget. Ah-ran starts to sway with a headache, which makes Sang-tae look over in concern and Kang-ja rush to her side to steady her. After an hour and a half of pontificating, the chairman and Jung-woo retire to the secret âlaundry machineâ vault. The chairman advises him to work well with Ae-yeon, and not to screw around with any of the info in this room. The next class is gym, and while everyone literally falls out of the path of Sang-taeâs soccer ball gotta kiss up to the school prez, the girls gossip on the sidelines. A volleyball rolls to Kang-ja just as the chairman exits the building, and she takes the opportunity to serve the ball into his back. The chairman glowers, and Kang-ja apologizes profusely. The chairman vents his ire the usual wayâby kicking Vice Principal Ohâand orders the man to flunk Kang-ja in next weekâs midterms. VP Oh âYes sir! But⊠sheâs already at rock-bottomâŠâ At lunch, Sang-tae cuts in front of Ah-ran, who tells him to get in the back of line like everyone else. He says haughtily that the school is like his home and he doesnât wait in lines, which doesnât impress Ah-ran, who tells him to quit acting like a kidâhe can go home and be a child with his mother. But mention of his mother sparks his temper, and he flings her lunch tray aside. Then Kang-ja steps in and asks if his mother taught him his crap manners, and he throws utensils. She grabs his lapel muttering that kids like him deserve to be hit, but out come the smartphones. His cronies warn that if she bullies sheâll be expelled, and nobodyâs willing to back her up in standing up to Sang-tae. He sneers at her and Ah-ran to come over to his side instead of being outcasts. Ah-ran glares. âIâll starve, but I wonât stick with you.â Itâs only Ah-ranâs asking look that keeps Kang-ja from going after Sang-tae again. Kang-ja ushers her out of the cafeteria while sputtering in indignation, but Ah-ran tells her that school has always been like this. Kang-ja buys them bread for lunch and asks if Ah-ran has been enduring this treatment the whole time. Ah-ran replies that any high schooler in Korea has to be tough enough to endure this much. Kang-ja sighs and turns that around on herself, saying that a Korean mother ought to be tough enough to endure this as well. Dong-chil has Kang-jaâs husband Jin-sang on a project to collect as many names as possible. Itâs not clear for what purpose, but given how he orders him to make people up out of thin air if necessary, undoubtedly itâs for the shady underside of whatever his construction company is doing. Jung-woo takes a look at the numbers and has a similar responseâif there are no cheaper materials for purchase, make them somehow. Dong-chil understands the order, but cautions that they have to pay a certain price to keep things looking legitimate. Jung-woo reminds him that itâs his job to take care of these concerns. Jung-woo then suggests that having âa childâ Bok-dong watching Ah-ran isnât enough, because she could do a lot of damage. The implication is to have Dong-chil take over, which he actually seems uncomfortable with. And you know youâre a real scumbag when your resident lowlife looks uneasy at how scummy youâre being. Dong-chil wonders to himself if heâs being set up to be the fall guy. Gong-jooâs princess minions god I love them and their ever-changing hairdos prepare blueprints and a plan for breaking into Jung-wooâs apartment. They enact the mission using methods like blinding the CCTV cameras with eggs and flour and unlocking the front door through the peephole. Kang-jaâs search takes a while because she canât find the envelope, and Gong-joo is first to see Jung-woo and Ae-yeon arriving in the garage. Kang-ja heads for the exit but canât resist one last search through a trash bin. Princess Minion 1 thinks fast to delay them, and arrives shouting Jung-wooâs name just as he gets his front door open. He pretends like heâs an old buddy, acting like itâs so funny that Jung-wooâs âactingâ like he doesnât recognize him. While heâs being delayed in the hall, Ae-yeon enters first and gasps to see Kang-ja rooting through the trash. She doesnât understand what Kang-jaâs doing here, but covers up for her and gives her the opening to slip out unseen. She follows her outside to confront her, asking incredulously why sheâs going after Jung-woo, convinced Kang-jaâs following a false line of suspicion. Kang-ja says that she has proof that Jung-woo impregnated a student, and that Ae-yeon just doesnât know what heâs really like. She thanks her for helping, and heads off. Kang-ja returns to the princessmobile empty-handed, only to find the car empty as well. Gong-joo tells her over the phone to wait just a while, and directs her princesses to keep digging through the building trash pile. God I love them all. They come back covered in refuse, but also successful Gong-joo has the envelope. Kang-ja thanks her in tears, saying that Gong-joo saved her daughter. Gong-joo cradles Kang-ja and says, âIâve saved my daughter too. My daughter Bang-wool.â Aw, tears. Noah shares his concerns with his father that night, disappointed that he couldnât get the kids to open up to him. His father assures him that all kids are like that, and that itâs not his fault. But itâs little comfort to Noah, who explains how Kang-ja and Ah-ran ate snacks for lunch outside, and watching that made him feel useless. Ignorant. Unable to help. His father says wisely, âThat powerlessness you feelâthatâs what the kids feel. Youâve started to match your eye level to theirs. Our son is becoming a real teacher.â Kang-ja dresses up in the morning for an important meeting, which has her already suspicious mother-in-law extra suspicious at all her recent odd behavior. She asks if Kang-jaâs having an affair, perhaps with that homeroom teacher, and tries to keep Kang-ja from leaving. In the brief struggle, Kang-ja drops her purse, and out comes the pregnancy test. Eep! Kang-ja promises to explain everything later and hurries out. She meets her entourage to file her complaint with the education ministry, and presents her evidence and her charge against Jung-woo for being responsible for Yi-kyungâs âsuicide.â Throws confetti. By which I mean thereâs real confetti, thrown by Princess Minion 1 to commemorate the moment. Two inspectors from the education ministry come to school to take Jung-woo in for questioning, which is enough to get the school buzzing. Kang-ja tells Ah-ran about finding the evidence left by Yi-kyung and reporting the teacher, and says, âNo matter how scary the world is, bad guys do get punished. Thatâs why if you hide something up front out of fear, it just complicates things. If there are difficult problems you canât figure out on your own, tell Mom, okay?â Ah-ran is moved and reassured, and Kang-ja pulls her into a hug with a relieved sigh. But things arenât ever so simple, and the investigation department recognizes the names involved, knowing that theyâre backed by powerful people. This has education Minister Kang, Jung-wooâs father, swooping into action immediately. He summons his son and puts in calls to do damage control. News travels swiftly, and Ae-yeon catches wind of the movements. She calls Dong-chil to ask about it, and he answers noncommittally while looking at a safe, trying to decide something. But what? Minister Kang is apoplectic in fury, reminding Jung-woo that he just used up his last chance. âI should have gotten rid of you earlier,â he fumes. âIâve dragged this out too long.â He orders Jung-woo to leave the country and live âas deadâ out of his sight. Kang-ja just has a few loose ends to tie before quitting her schoolgirl act, meaning Bok-dong and Sang-tae, and doesnât notice that her mother-in-law is following her in a taxi. Mom-in-law gasps in shock to see Kang-ja in a school uniform pulling up in front of a motel, which sends her imagination into overdrive. But Kang-ja bypasses the motel and heads to the campus nearby, where mom-in-law grabs her by the bookbag. Kang-ja gasps and promises to tell her the truth, trying to prevent a scene, just as the mean girl trio spots her and tells her to hurry before sheâs late. Kang-ja hurriedly waves them on and goes away sputtering âMother!ââwhich makes the girls wonder why she has a different mother from last time. One must be the bio-mom who abandoned her, and the other one the woman who raised her. They burst into class to spread the news about Bang-wool being dragged off by a totally old grandma-looking mom, and Ah-ran realizes whatâs going on. Mom-in-law orders Kang-ja home, tut-tutting at the ridiculousness of her madcap scheme. Kang-ja pleads for understanding, saying that she just needs to take care of a few âproblem children.â Mom-in-law is unbending, but Kang-ja convinces her that she has to at least take care of dropout paperwork and will only go today. Kang-ja heads in, only to see the chairmanâs fancy car pulling upâand Jung-woo emerging alongside Ae-yeon. Jung-woo has been promoted to director of the board, and we see that he had blackmailed his father as a last resort, thanks to the preparation of his mother before her death. He says he doesnât want to use his motherâs âgiftâ against his father, and so, Minister Kang gives in. Kang-ja returns to check on the complaint, only to be told the office never received it. She pitches a fit, demanding CCTV footage and meetings with supervisors, and the office replays yesterdayâs tapes for her. Thereâs nothing. Kang-ja leaves feeling dejected, and belatedly realizes that she ought to be worried about Ah-ran. She hurries back to school just as Jung-woo is also on the prowl, though her desk is empty. Itâs a race to find her first, and Jung-woo is closer; he enters the library just as sheâs in the back aisle, trying to find that switch to open the wall. He finds her as sheâs getting a call from her mother, and snatches the phone away just as sheâs about to answer. He asks if she filed the complaint and launches into a speech about her wasting her brains writing fiction⊠and thatâs when Noah arrives in the library and overhears the curious conversation. Jung-woo makes a veiled threat about people like her ending their lives lonely and scared, and throwing themselves off rooftops. He advises her to think of herself and her future, and based on the choice she makes now, her life could take on very different paths. He advises her to make the âwise choice,â and if she doesnât, heâll have to pay a visit to her parents. Noah finds the exchange strange enough to ask Jung-woo what he was talking about, not accepting the answer about just wanting Ah-ran to study hard. Noah notes that Jung-woo has a talent for telling bald lies with a poker face, and demands to know what he showed Ah-ran. Jung-woo warns him to stay out of it, ignoring Noahâs demand to see that complaint, and leaves. The encounter leaves Ah-ran trembling, but she puts on a brave face before her mother. She tells Kang-ja that she wants to focus on her studies and forget everything, and that continuing with this feels like a waste. Kang-ja guesses that Jung-woo threatened her, but Ah-ran returns, âDonât you know that the more you do this, the more danger it puts me in?â She tells Kang-ja to stop things now, and Kang-ja is left reeling. COMMENTS I knew it was too soon for Kang-ja to save the day and turn in her high school uniform for good, but the drama has done such a good job pacing the events that this progression up to the filing of the complaint felt natural, and that Kang-ja was ready to make her exit. I didnât want to see her leave the school since thereâs still so much story to be mined from it both on the dramatic and comedic fronts, but I wondered how to keep her cover intact with more people finding out about it, and especially once sheâd stepped forward to file a charge. But weâre not dealing with one corrupt individual here but an entire system full of broken pieces, so it makes sense to depict the perpetuation of injustice at every level. So now itâs time for some background players to step it up, like the officials at the education ministry; today felt like the first episode where I saw the reason for all these characters having been introduced previously. The plot is ever so gradually bringing everybody together into the same story thread, so that while I never felt that Angry Mom was disjointed the opposite, in factâitâs quite cohesive and nicely woven together, I like that things are coming into sharper focus. We still donât know what kind of threat Jung-woo is holding over his fatherâs head, but I donât know that itâs important. The point is more that there is abuse and politicking every step of the way, and one personâs crusade against the entire behemoth of a system canât be so easily resolved. An angry momâs work is never done, it seems. Not that I mind, since I really love the depiction of mother-daughter relationships in this drama, whether they be literal mothers with their daughters or the faux ones, like Gong-joo and Kang-ja. I love the sweetness of Gong-joo, who used to be the sidekick to badass Bang-wool, stepping up to take on a maternal role; Kang-jaâs always been the protector, but itâs a comforting thought to see that she has people looking out for her, too. You can see Kang-ja in Ah-ran as well, in the way Ah-ran is just as moved to step up for the weak and unwilling to give in to intimidation. Kang-ja may be the more fearless badass one could argue that perhaps she had less to lose as a lost teenager, but itâs both admirable and worrisome that Ah-ran is so staunch in her beliefs, that she wonât kowtow to Sang-tae or cower before Bok-dong. Her unbending idea of right over wrong is, as Jung-woo insinuates, a stumbling block to what could be a successful future⊠and so I completely understand when Ah-ran decides to give up and put her head down Stop making waves, and maybe life will be better for everyoneâminus the wronged innocent dead girl, that is. It must be crushing for Kang-ja to see Ah-ran come to that point, but the good thing about Kang-ja is, she leads by example. Whatâs the use in spouting platitudes when you can prove them firsthand?
